Details scarce in weekend homicide
A man was shot and killed on the city’s west side early last Saturday morning; however, few details have been released to the public.
Chief of Police Adrian Crespin confirmed to the Optic that one person was shot and killed in the 500 block of Socorro Street in the early morning hours of May 15, but said he could not release the name of the person killed because family members have not been notified.
Crespin said he believes the Office of the Medical Investigator has performed an autopsy, but said OMI had not yet provided the Las Vegas Police Department details on the cause or manner of death in this case.
“It’s still an active investigation,” Crespin said. “Right now, it’s being investigated as a homicide.”
Following the shooting, one person was taken to Alta Vista Regional Hospital with a gunshot wound, Crespin said. The person later died at the hospital.
Investigators haven’t determined what led to the shooting, and as of this writing, police had not made an arrest. Investigators are also trying to identify the person or people who transported the victim to Alta Vista.
LVPD is investigating someone as a “person of interest” in the shooting, according to Crespin. Although he would not say if that person is believed to be the shooter or not, Crespin added that he didn’t believe the public was in any danger.
Anyone with information about the shooting can call LVPD at 505-425-7504, and ask for the investigations division.
