Affeldt acquires historic establishment in Lamy
Historic Plaza Hotel and Hotel Castañeda restoration entrepreneur Allan Affeldt has added a Lamy restaurant and bar to the growing list of properties he is renovating and restoring.
Affeldt acquired the historic Legal Tender restaurant and saloon building in Lamy from the Lamy Railroad & History Museum.
The acquisition was completed July 13 and closed with no cash changing hands. Instead, the Lamy museum board transferred the Legal Tender to a nonprofit Affeldt created in Winslow, Ariz., where he owns the La Posada Hotel.
The museum board sought Affeldt’s expertise in restoring the Lamy property, which is listed on National Register of Historic Places. It’s located near the train station where Amtrak recently announced it’s closing the ticket counter; Affeldt and many other businesspeople have opposed plans to close the Amtrak route that runs through Lamy and Las Vegas on its way into the Midwest.
“It ties these historic railroad communities together,” Affeldt said. “We think that when people come out to discover the Legal Tender, they’re also going to rediscover Las Vegas.”
Affeldt believes the Legal Tender will be open by early 2019, but with a lot of work to be completed before it’s operational, it’s tough to give a specific date.
This week, Affeldt announced Murphy O’Brien, known for his work at two successful Santa Fe establishments, Café Fina and the Coyote Café, will be the restaurateur of The Legal Tender.
The Legal Tender is located at 151 Old Lamy Trail, in Lamy, N.M.
