Man dead following shootout with Las Vegas police

A Las Vegas man died Saturday night during a shooting involving the Las Vegas Police Department. Police have identified the man as 30-year-old Jeffrey Scott.

Officers with the Las Vegas Police Department responded to a home in the 1300 block of Keen Street around 9:30 p.m. Saturday night about a domestic disturbance, according to New Mexico State Police, the agency investigating the shooting.

As officers attempted to contact the person who’d called police, Scott exited a nearby residence, pointed a firearm at LVPD officers and fired multiple rounds, according to NMSP investigators.

Two LVPD officers returned fire, and Scott fled on foot. Officers located Scott’s body on the side of the house, dead from “an apparent gunshot wound,” according to police.

The Office of the Medical Investigator has not determined the cause or manner of death.

No officers were injured during the shooting, and neither LVPD nor NMSP has released the names of the officers involved.

LVPD Chief of Police Adrian Crespin told the Optic that both officers have been placed on paid administrative leave, which he said is standard procedure for any officer who fires a weapon while on duty.

The investigation is being led by the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau.

Crespin said the investigation was turned over to NMSP to ensure transparency.

“Since our officers were involved with the shooting, we just want to make sure it’s transparent and that the investigation is done by an outside agency,” Crespin said.

Once the investigation has concluded, the case will be turned over to the Fourth Judicial District Attorney’s office for review, according to Dusty Francisco, a spokesman for NMSP.

NMSP investigators will submit a briefing on the investigation to OMI, Francisco said, and OMI will make the final determination about the cause and manner of Scott’s death.

Crespin said he couldn’t discuss many details of the shooting because of the ongoing investigation, but said he hoped to be able to release more details by the end of the week.

“Our prayers go out to everybody that’s affected,” Crespin said. “The family, our officers — the whole community is affected by this.”
