Police: Woman repeatedly rammed vehicle
A Mora woman intentionally rammed her vehicle into another vehicle — nearly hitting two men — fled the scene, then returned to ram the vehicle four more times, according to a criminal complaint filed in Mora Magistrate Court.
Amity F. Maes, 29, was arrested March 15 and charged with two counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, among other charges.
New Mexico State Police was called to a stretch of NM-518 around 9:30 p.m. March 14 after a woman reported the incident. The woman told police she’d been traveling south on 518 when she pulled off the road to locate something she’d dropped.
While parked on the side of the road, the woman’s brother and a friend walked up to the car to talk to her. While chatting with the two men, she said Maes drove up and stopped in front of her car, then backed up in “a fast motion,” striking her car and nearly hitting the two men, according to the complaint.
After striking the vehicle, Maes drove away, heading north on 518. The woman called police, and by the time she’d hung up, Maes had returned. The woman said Maes again rammed her vehicle, this time from behind, a total of four more times before again driving away, heading south on 518.
Police located Maes walking south on 518 around 10 p.m. She told police she’d parked her car at a friend’s house because it had a flat tire.
Maes was detained and police later located her vehicle, noting damage to the front and back of the vehicle, as well as “white paint transfer,” according to the complaint.
Maes was arrested and booked into the San Miguel County Detention Center. She is charged with two felony counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, along with misdemeanor charges of driving while license revoked, no proof of insurance, careless driving, leaving the scene of an accident and failure to give immediate notice of an accident.
During a March 17 hearing, Judge Cindy Garza set bond for Maes at $13,000, and ordered that Maes wear a GPS monitor if released.
In the conditions of release, Judge Garza noted Maes’ multiple pending court cases, which include five magistrate court cases, and one district court case. Charges in those cases include resisting arrest, possession of drug paraphernalia, obstructing a report of child abuse or neglect, driving while license revoked, no proof of insurance and speeding.
Just last week, Maes accepted a plea agreement in another case, pleading guilty to battery upon a peace officer, open container and no driver’s license.
In September 2020, Maes was convicted of driving while license revoked for reasons related to DWI. Later in September 2020, she pleaded no contest to criminal trespass after being accused of stealing security cameras from a relative’s home.
For her most recent charges, Maes is scheduled to appear in Mora Magistrate Court March 31 for a preliminary hearing. She was still in custody at SMCDC as of this writing.
