A 23-year-old Las Vegas woman who crashed into two parked vehicles on Seventh Street was driving while impaired and searching for a dropped cigarette, according to Las Vegas Police.

Savana E. Romero was charged with a felony and six misdemeanors following the Oct. 27 crash that happened around 4 a.m in the 800 block of Seventh Street. Romero was booked into the San Miguel County Detention Center later that day.

According to a statement of probable cause filed in San Miguel Magistrate Court, LVPD officers arrived at a house on Seventh Street and found an abandoned Nissan that had rear-ended a car parked at the home. The force of the impact also pushed the parked car into another parked vehicle, causing damage to both vehicles.

Although the driver of the Nissan was not at the scene when police arrived, officers were able to determine that Romero was the registered owner and located Romero at her home in the 700 block of Baca Street.

Romero told police she was driving home when she dropped a cigarette, and as she reached down to retrieve the cigarette, she crashed into a parked car. According to police, Romero admitted to leaving the scene of the crash, saying she was “scared” because she’d had three beers before getting into her car to drive home.

Romero failed multiple sobriety tests, according to the probable cause statement, and though an officer could smell alcohol on her breath, during breath tests, Romero’s blood alcohol concentration tested at .07 and .06, below New Mexico’s legal limit of .08.

Romero was arrested and booked into the San Miguel County Detention Center on a felony charge of criminal damage to property over $1,000, as well as misdemeanor charges of driving while impaired, criminal damage to property under $1,000, careless driving, failure to stop upon striking an unattended vehicle, failure to give immediate notice of an accident and for not having her driver’s license in her possession.

At an Oct. 28 hearing, Judge Christian Montaño set Romero’s bond at $3,000, unsecured, citing that she had no prior criminal history. She was released from SMCDC later that day.

Romero is scheduled to appear in San Miguel Magistrate Court Nov. 26 for an arraignment.
