New Mexico State Police arrested a Rowe man for threatening to shoot an officer with a shotgun, according to a criminal complaint filed in San Miguel Magistrate Court.

Jon Jones, 57, was arrested Oct. 18 and booked into the San Miguel County Detention Center on a second-degree felony charge of assault with intent to commit a violent felony on a peace officer, along with misdemeanor charges of resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.

NMSP was called to a home in Rowe on the evening of Oct. 18 by one of Jones’ neighbors who said her 15-year-old son was home alone and that Jones was threatening him.

An NMSP officer arrived at the home just as the boy’s parents did, and while the officer was speaking with the boy about the threats made, his parents notified the officer that Jones was outside yelling.

According to police, when the officer went outside, Jones and his wife were standing near a fence, and when an officer asked Jones to come talk to him, Jones began yelling obscenities and became “aggressive” with the officer.

The officer told Jones he was under arrest for disorderly conduct, but Jones walked away and returned to his house.

When the officer went to Jones’ home, police say Jones shouted at the officer from the front door, saying, “I’m going to grab my shotgun and blow your f—— head off.”

As more officers arrived, Jones exited the house through the garage, and police were able to handcuff him without incident, though, according to the criminal complaint, Jones continued to shout expletives at officers.

During an Oct. 21 hearing in San Miguel Magistrate Court, Judge Melanie Rivera set Jones’ bond at $5,000, unsecured, citing no criminal history in New Mexico, and a minimal criminal history in Colorado and Illinois.

Jones was released from SMCDC on Oct. 21. He is scheduled to appear in Magistrate Court on Nov. 11 for an arraignment hearing.
