Police identify man killed in recent shooting

From the Las Vegas Optic

Las Vegas Police have identified the man killed last week following two shootings within minutes of each other.

Marcos “Mark” L. Carrillo, 42, of Montezuma, died of a single gunshot wound after being found unresponsive in a home in the 600 block of Union Street in Las Vegas around 7 p.m. on Aug. 3.

Carrillo had been released from the San Miguel County Detention Center three days before the shooting, on July 31, where he’d been held since July 4.

As the Optic previously reported, Carrillo was accused of breaking into a home near Union Elementary School and attacking two people, including his father. Days later, Carrillo was in court for sentencing following convictions in a September 2018 incident where he struck an LVPD officer with a two-by-four, and a November 2018 incident where he kicked officers.

Carrillo’s death was the second shooting police responded to on Aug. 3.

Earlier, around 6:30 p.m., police were called to a home about a half mile north, in the 500 block of Perez Street, where officers found 39-year-old Gilbert Montoya bleeding from multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to Alta Vista Regional Hospital where he was in stable condition as of the last police update.

Police arrested 40-year-old Marcos R. Ruiz in connection with the shooting and booked him into SMCDC on charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

LVPD Cmdr. Steve Pacheco told the Optic the Office of the Medical Investigator has not yet provided LVPD with a copy of its report and that, at this time, Marcos Ruiz is not a suspect in Carrillo’s death.

“Further investigation is necessary to confirm or clear Ruiz as the shooter of Carrillo,” Pacheco said.

Saturday’s violence marks the city’s fourth shooting and third unsolved homicide in seven weeks.

Around 11:30 p.m. on July 22, Leroy “Smurf” Lucero, 48, was killed outside a home in the 200 block of San Miguel Street after being shot multiple times. Police have not named a suspect.

Just weeks before, Cruz Gallegos, 27, was shot and killed in a home in the 1100 block of Chavez Street.

No suspects have been named in his death, but LVPD did name a person of interest, Arturo Ruiz, 49, a relative of Marcos Ruiz.

According to police, Arturo Ruiz may have witnessed the shooting death of Gallegos, and Arturo Ruiz has been arrested multiple times on charges unrelated to the death of Gallegos.

On July 9, Arturo Ruiz was arrested and charged with two counts of tampering with evidence, and one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

He was released on bond a few days later, but arrested again on July 25 on a warrant for failing to comply with the conditions of his release. According to documents filed in San Miguel Magistrate Court, Arturo Ruiz now faces eight felony counts of escape from a custody release program after data from a GPS ankle monitor showed he left his home multiple times without authorization and in violation of a court order.

Arturo Ruiz was also charged with a felony count of trafficking controlled substances after police located a bag of heroin on him during the arrest.

Bond for his escape case was set at $50,000, and a $100,000 bond was imposed after the trafficking charge. Arturo Ruiz remains in custody at SMCDC as of this writing.

Pacheco said police have not found a link between any of the homicides, but the investigation is ongoing.

In a Wednesday press release, LVPD said its officers were following leads and encouraged the public to come forward with information that might aid the investigation.
