Police: Man struck wife, daughter

From the Las Vegas Optic

Just days before Christmas, Las Vegas Police responded to a domestic disturbance call that resulted in a Las Vegas man being charged with child abuse.

Brian E. Mondragon, 44, was booked into the San Miguel County Detention Center on Dec. 22, charged with felony abuse of a child and misdemeanor battery against a household member.

According to records filed in San Miguel Magistrate Court, LVPD was dispatched to a home in the 600 block of Railroad Ave. just after 11 p.m. on Dec 22. Witnesses told police they were having a Christmas party when Mondragon became upset because his two children were up late.

Mondragon’s wife told police he’d been acting aggressively toward their daughter, and when she attempted to intervene, Mondragon turned toward her quickly. His arm struck her in the face, breaking her glasses.

When she intervened a second time, she said Mondragon grabbed her neck and began to choke her. Mondragon stopped when another person attending the party separated them.

According to a police report, an officer observed a broken pair of glasses, as well as cuts to the woman’s lip. The report also states the woman had “redness on the neck and chest area.”

The partygoer who separated the couple confirmed to police that Mondragon had struck and choked his wife, and after talking to more witnesses, police determined Mondragon had also choked one of his children.

Mondragon told police he did not want to provide a statement, then said his wife had hosted the Christmas party where everyone had been drinking alcohol. Mondragon told police he’d asked his son to take out the trash, and he said that’s when his wife began yelling at him. He admitted he pushed her away from him, but said he did not know how she received her injuries.

Mondragon was released from SMCDC Jan. 3, after posting 10 percent of an $8,000 bond, but was ordered to have no contact with his wife or children. He was previously convicted for aggravated DWI in 1999, and a second DWI in 2014.

He is due in Magistrate Court 10 a.m. Jan. 31 for a hearing.
