Luna to host employment summit, job fair
A two-day employment event is coming to Luna Community College on Thursday, Sept. 13, and Friday Sept. 14.
The events are hosted by the Northern Area Local Workforce Development Board. Both events will take place in the auditorium at Luna Community College, according to Rock Ulibarri, the director of adult education for Luna.
“We’re going to have a Workforce system overview of the Workforce Innovation Opportunity Act,” Ulibarri said. “We’ll discuss all the different partners that are under that act, and all the resources that are available to community members and business owners.”
Among the many organizations that are scheduled to present at the summit are Los Alamos National Labs, the San Miguel County Economic Development Corporation and Luna Community College.
“We’ll present on the Adult Education Program, and what it’s all about,” Ulibarri said. “It’s changed dramatically. It not just about obtaining your high school equivalence anymore. It’s so much more than that.”
The event is free but does require registration, which can be done online by visiting northernboard.org. Breakfast and lunch will be served, and both are free as well.
During two roundtable discussions, those who attend will have the opportunity to ask questions from a variety of presenters including representatives from LANL, Sandia National Labs and New Mexico Behavioral Health. The Workforce summit is scheduled to run from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13.
On Friday, a job fair will be held in the Luna auditorium.
“There’s going to be some ‘rapid hire’,” Ulibarri said. “There’s going to be a lot of employers. We’re going to try to fill 50 tables. Even the human resources department for Luna Community College will have a table there for all its job openings. If you’re interested, you can go on the website and see what positions are open and get prepared with resumés.”
No registration is required for the job fair. Job seekers can attend anytime between 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Friday, Sept. 14, and should come prepared to be interviewed by employers at the event.
For more information about either event, visit northernboard.org or call the Northern Area Local Workforce at 505-986-0363.
“Bring your resumé — and dress sharp,” Ulibarri said.
