Man charged in Mora County stabbing
A Holman man was arrested following a recent stabbing that occurred in the 2100 block of State Road 518 in Cleveland.
Jesus Maes, 21, was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, according to a criminal complaint filed in Mora Magistrate Court.
On the evening of June 13, New Mexico State Police responded to a stabbing call along State Road 518. When police arrived around 9:30 p.m., they found a man with multiple injuries to his chest consistent with stab wounds.
The man told police he was attempting to hitchhike while walking home from work when a woman driving a dark-colored SUV pulled to the side of the road. The passenger door opened, and believing the SUV had stopped to offer him a ride, the man approached the vehicle.
The victim told police two men exited the vehicle and attacked him, one of them with a knife. The victim identified the man who stabbed him as Maes, telling police he knew Maes and that they “did not get along.”
When State Police interviewed Maes at his home, he told an officer he’d spent the day watching YouTube videos and that he’d never left the residence. Maes admitted he knew a woman who drove a green SUV, but said it had been broken down for months. Maes also admitted to knowing the victim, saying they had “a history.”
Maes was arrested and taken to a State Police holding cell, where police say he then admitted he’d left the residence with a friend around dusk to go buy beer for his father. He also admitted to seeing the victim walking along the road.
The victim was transported to Alta Vista Regional Hospital to be treated for his injuries.
Maes was booked into the San Miguel County Detention Center on June 14. He is due in Mora Magistrate Court for a preliminary hearing on Aug. 28.
